Jonas Stirner, worked directly with Robert Rauschenberg as an Artist Assistant for fifteen years on Captiva Island. During that time, Jonas had the opportunity to create his own sculpture on the grounds of Rauschenberg’s compound. Rauschenberg himself became a major collector of Jonas’s work and today the collection is maintained by the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation.
Bishop is an early sculpture of mine I made for an Art Haus show in Florida. At the time I was working with Robert Rauschenberg and he attended the show. I was extremely happy to learn that Bob loved the piece and decided to buy it.
Unlike the majority of my work Lotus I began as a concept that was work and reworked as a small model. I later enlarged the model to is full scale of 10 x 6 x 5 feet. My other works from the past thirty years have been created working directly with larger material and creating the final Sculpture. This project was a real departure, one that I truely enjoyed and look forward working this way again for other venues.
This is a six foot tall kinetic sculpture, that rotates in a ten foot radius. Built in Florida and now residing in New Jersey.
Exhibited at Grounds for Sculpture in 2016 and this piece is now part of Grounds for Sculptures permanent collection.
